What Is Halal Meat?
Halal meat adheres to Islamic laws which govern how it is reared and slaughtered. To be classed as halal, the meat is required to be slaughtered via a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe. Halal meat cannot contain alcohol and the animal must be fed a vegetarian diet and must not be treated with growth hormones or antibiotics.
How is Halal Meat Slaughtered?
Halal meat is slaughtered by cutting across the throat with a sharp blade. This method severs the carotid arteries, jugular vein and windpipe. The animal must be healthy and alive at the time of slaughter, and the blood is then drained from the carcass.
Is Halal the Same as Kosher?
Halal meat and Kosher meat are different. Halal requires a certain method of slaughter and must not contain alcohol, be fed a vegetarian diet and not be treated with growth hormones or antibiotics. For Kosher meat, the animal is required to have split hooves and chew their cud. Animals must be killed by a specially trained sochet.

No. Animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter to be considered halal. They must also be slaughtered with a slit across the throat, however stunning can sometimes kill an animal, meaning it hasn’t been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law.

Here at the Food Barn Ltd, we have a strict policy of keeping all pork products off-site and are registered with HMC who we have worked with and have passed their stringent adherence to no pork on site policy..We have all pork products butchered and packaged at a completely separate site which is processed on our behalf-so all pork products are kept entirely separate and delivered on day of collection – securely packaged and carefully handled separately in transit to ensure and maintain zero contamination across the board.
